Data Privacy Statement for our Website

The Evangelische Akademie zu Berlin has the mission to get people to talk to each other about religious, cultural, contemporary, political, economic and social issues. We do so by organising public events for which we collect data. We take the protection of your personal data very seriously and explain our approach in the following section.

2. Basic principles of data collection

The Ev. Akademie zu Berlin is subject to the data privacy policy of the Evangelical Church in Germany (DSG-EKD) as well as its IT Security Regulation. Pursuant to section 2a of the Data Protection Act of the EKD, we pursue the principle of data minimisation and data economy.

When you register for an event, we need your personal data. As a matter of principle, this data is not passed on to third parties with the exception of legitimate audits by our grant donors.


3. For how long is your data stored?

We process and store your personal data as long as necessary to fulfil our statutory tasks and contractual obligations. This means that we have to store your data in the framework of legal storage periods (audits, tax inspections, principles of proper accounting) up to ten years.


4. Automatically collected data | logging

When you access our website, we generally capture and store the following information automatically transmitted by your browser:

  • Browser type and browser version
  • Operating system used
  • Referrer URL (the site you visited prior to our site)
  • Host name of the accessing computer (IP address)
  • Time of the server request.

For storage purposes beyond the duration of the access to our website, IP addresses are kept in an anonymous form and used exclusively to improve the content and functionality of the website. This data will not be merged with data from other data sources and no creation of person-related user profiles in any other way takes place.


5. Hosting

We operate the website Major parts of our website provide information to the reader and may be used without giving personal data. The website of the Ev. Akademie zu Berlin is hosted by the Wegewerk company ( For this purpose, an agreement for contract data processing exists. When registering for an event, you are referred to an encrypted site of the company EDV-Kommunikation Strassner (SSL encryption: the address line in the browser changes from http:// to https://). A website with SSL encryption guarantees that data you transferred to us cannot be read or changed by third parties. Despite this security measure, we must draw your attention to the fact that data transmission on the internet may have security gaps. Absolute protection of data against third-party access is technically impossible.


6. Use of cookies

Our website uses cookies. Cookies are small text files that are saved on your computer and stored by your browser. They do not do any damage to your computer and do not contain viruses. They simply make our offer more user-friendly, effective and secure.  Cookies make it possible to recognise your browser next time you visit us.

Most of the cookies we use are so called ‘session cookies’. They are automatically deleted after closure of your browser program. You can set your browser to notify you once cookies are sent or you can deactivate the functionality storing the cookie. If you deactivate cookies, it may happen that the use of our website and the services offered is only possible to a limited degree. External websites that are included by frames may, under certain conditions, also place cookies. These cookies must also be barred from access and can be rejected by you.

7. Usage analysis

Our website uses the open source web analysis service Matomo (formerly ‘Piwik’). Matomo is operated on a server by the company Wegewerk (see item 5). Matomo generates two cookies. If you agree to cookies being used, the data on your use of our website generated by the cookie is stored together with other usage data on the Wegewerk server. These statistics help improve the website’s usability and the usefulness of its content. We store these statistics for several years. To protect your identity, the second half of your IP address is deleted upon saving. We are not able to assign this data to a specific person.

8. Integrated map services

The website integrates the map service of GoogleMaps.

The provider is Google Inc., 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043, USA.


In order to use GoogleMaps functionalities it is necessary to transmit your IP address to a GoogleMaps server. For technical reasons, GoogleMaps stores a cookie. GoogleMaps is integrated to be able to map a core function of our offer, the localization of the Protestant academy’s venues, with reasonable effort. We think this interest justifies the technically required data transfer to implement this function.


9. Data entered in forms

When you send us an inquiry via the contact form, this data entered is stored to process your request and for possible follow-up questions. Our staff receives this data as an email. This data is not passed on to third parties.



10. Distribution of our programme by e-mail

When ordering programmes for events, we need your e-mail address. Programmes are sent by e-mail via a server of the computing centre of the Ev. Landeskirche Berlin-Brandenburg-schlesische Oberlausitz (


11. Comment  function

When using the comment function on our website, your comments and possibly all information on the time when you make the comment, your e-mail address and the name you give and, by way of exception, the IP address. Unfortunately, we sometimes need this data to take action against the author in the case of infringements of rights such as threats, insults or encouragement of legal offences. In such cases, the authorship can only be established beyond doubt by police using your IP address, if it is not only stored in the log file. This data, together with the comment, is stored permanently.


12. Social networks

Our website contains links activating functions of individual social networks (hereinafter simply referred to as ‘services’). When you click on one of these links, a direct connection between your browser and this service is established even without leaving our site. The service receives the information that you have visited our website with your IP address. These services are the following:

13. Right to information, correction and deletion
