About Us
The “Evangelische Akademie zu Berlin” (The Protestant Academy Berlin) provides an open, interdisciplinary discussion platform for the questions and issues of our time in the capital of Germany, Berlin. The Academy creates space for an open dialogue with a diverse group of people seeking an orientation in life. In this context, the role of religion is transparent in a social and societal context. A space is created where reason and faith complement each other.
Our Mission
60 years ago, the first Protestant Academies were established with the protestant church's vision of taking responsibility for society as a whole (www.ekd.de/akademien). Today, the Academies' mission is to be a forum for multiple perspectives and discussion within the areas of politics and culture, church and society, economy and science. For more than 60 years the Academies have been strengthening and developing their skills in the fields of inter-religious and intercultural dialogue. As Berlin is still at the center of the Eastern and Western German cultures of post-Wall Germany, the Academy is playing an active role in this ongoing dialogue between East and West. In addition, the Protestant Academy Berlin is involved in the dialogue of the emerging Eastern European countries as well as the Central European countries.
Our Areas of Expertise
The Protestant Academy Berlin is comprised of six departments:
• Religion
• Politics
• Economy
• Health
• Education
• Contemporary History.
Organisation
On behalf of the Protestant Church in Germany (Evangelische Kirche in Deutschland), the Protestant Academy Berlin hosts conferences and seminars, as well as discussions, lectures, workshops, and informal discussion groups. We organise conferences and symposia. Here you find our publications.
The topics of discussion are chosen by a team of directors.
The biannual program as well as programs of individual events may be ordered in print or viewed online.
The generous selection of events and topics are the work of an interdisciplinary team of directors, who develop, prepare and facilitate these events. The team has a far reaching network of contacts within various target groups, initiatives, associations, interest groups, political parties as well as government institutions and utilizes them for these events for the benefit of all.
In these endeavours, the Protestant Academies support religious and spiritual perspectives as well as many other approaches.
Location of Academy events
The conference venues of the Protestant Academy Berlin are worth visiting on their own merit; the Protestant House of Education (Evangelische Bildungsstätte) is on the lovely peninsula of Schwanenwerder in the south-western part of Berlin, right on Lake Wannsee. The French Friedrichstadt Church is directly by the French Dome at Gendarmenmarkt in the old and new heart of Berlin, which rivals any other major square in Europe.
